Altos de Chavon
Altos de Chavon was inspired by a 16th Century Mediterranean village. Built on a cliff top from rustic coral rock with bougainvillaea and sprays of hibiscus blossoming everywhere, it is the home, workplace and inspiration for many artists. In Altos de Chavon you will find a bakery, supermarket, restaurants, bars, an art gallery, weaving and ceramic studios, a regional museum of archaeology that documents the island's rich Pre-Columbian taino heritage and a Design School affiliated to Parsons School of Design in New York. The village also has a 5,000 seat open air Greek style amphitheatre, which was inaugurated in 1982 by Frank Sinatra with " The Concert for the Americas" and Carlos Santana. Since then the amphitheatre has hosted concerts, symphonies, theatrical events, and festivals featuring such renowned artists as Julio Iglesias, Dizzy Gillespie, Sting and Andrea Bocelli among others.
